How can services drive value across the entire diagnostic pathway?
Each stage of the diagnostic pathway presents its own challenges.
The way in which you and your team respond to them is what determines the efficiency and value of your laboratory.

The analytical stage
The analytical stage plays a central role in laboratory diagnostics and is constantly being developed to obtain more accurate tests.
The constantly evolving regulations and new trends in technology demand continual updating. Manual tasks can slow down achievement. Possible solutions, such as laboratory automation, require the services of process optimisation specialists.
The post-analytical stage
The effective interpretation of data in the post-analytical stage calls for the right tools and skills.
A lack of integrated data can prevent doctors from receiving prompt, correct test results. Traceability, reporting, and analysis require specialist skills for successful implementation and constant monitoring to ensure safety and up-to-date services..
The pre-analytical stage
From the patient identification to the transport and triage, studies show that the pre-analytical stage is where most of the errors in the diagnostic process occur, accounting for approximately 62% of all diagnostic errors1,2.
Because a significant percentage of medical diagnosis is based on analytical test results1, pre-analytical errors and inefficiency can have a negative impact on patient care2. Intervention is required to ensure good pre-analytical practice.
Each clinical laboratory has specific requirements. We take the time to analyse your processes and get to know your staff. This is why our support is designed and tailored to your specific needs.
Our team includes clinical and diagnostic experts, computer scientists, engineers, certified Lean specialists, and project managers, and collaborates with you on best practice along the diagnostic pathway. Explore our range of services dedicated to the challenges faced by your staff and laboratory:
Laboratory design and the optimisation of pre-analytical and analytical flow
To optimise workflow, areas of inefficiency and problems relating to quality must be analysed to generate practical solutions in line with Lean strategies.
Our BD Professional Services related to Design & Optimisation

1. Solution Design
BD Solution Design is a service that supports laboratories in designing new organisational and operational models based on specific targets. Take your laboratory to the next level by combining the BD innovative solutions with a workflow optimisation service.

2. DREAM - Digital Remote Extraction Analysis & Monitoring
BD DREAM BSI (BloodStream Infections) supports hospitals in the fight against bloodstream infections through continuous monitoring of KPIs over the entire sepsis diagnostic pathway. The service provides useful information on improving the appropriateness of blood culture requests, good sampling practices, efficiency of processes/organisation, and an understanding of local epidemiology with particular focus on Multi Drug Resistant Organisms (MDROs).

3. LOC - Laboratory Optimisation and Capacity assessment
BD LOC is a BD-designed service for Molecular Biology laboratories that aims to optimise workflows and maximise the use of resources to ensure that set objectives (KPIs) are achieved. It is a flexible, personalised service designed to simplify the molecular sample pathway from arrival to reporting. BD specialists visit the laboratory to collect qualitative and quantitative data, with the aim of optimising workflow and utilisation of the BD MAX™ System.
4. Informatics
With increased pressure on laboratories to maintain efficiency, accreditation, workflow optimisation and best practice in diagnosis, information technology plays a key role beyond simply connecting instrumentation to the laboratory information system (LIS). Providing features such as traceability, reporting, analysis, expert rules engine and workflow management, informatics is a critical component of the integrated diagnostic solutions provided by BD. During and after installation, we provide comprehensive support, including hardware and software upgrades to ensure that the solution operates at maximum capacity.
Implementation of processes and solutions
At BD, our solution implementation methodology is based on best practice in project management, process organisation and the facilitation of communication. Because each laboratory is unique, we work together to create optimised, tailored solutions.
Our BD Professional Services related to Implementation
1. Project & Change Management
Our multidisciplinary team of highly qualified specialists and engineers can support the laboratory through all stages of the implementation and introduction of a new technology and/or organisation, working alongside it until it can launch its own routine. Change is a key moment in any project and it must be managed in the best possible way, without overlooking details that could compromise its success.
2. Product & Instrument Training
We offer healthcare practitioners all the experience gained by sharing useful knowledge from correct sampling to the report. The proposed programmes are packaged according to the requirements of laboratories in terms of methods of implementation and duration, in order to best support the staff involved.
Education and training of healthcare personnel
With their extensive scientific knowledge and years of clinical laboratory experience, our certified BD experts can provide practical and theoretical training on BD technologies, software and products, either in person or remotely.
Our BD Professional Services related to Education
1. ABC - Advancing Blood Culture
BD ABC – Advancing Blood Culture is a service to support healthcare practitioners in the management of sepsis by providing:
• educational support and training delivered by a qualified team on the problem of sepsis and best practice in the sampling of blood cultures;
• continuous improvement of performance indicators to maintain high quality and standardisation of processes concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of sepsis.
Successful training of healthcare personnel facilitates early diagnosis, thereby significantly reducing mortality rates and the costs of hospital admission.

2. BD eLearning
BD eLearning is an efficient, sustainable, fully customisable digital training tool on Best Practice in the pre-analytical stage. The following modules can also be combined to create a training programme more tailored to your needs:
• modules on best practice in the pre-analytical stage;
• modules on the correct use of BD Vacutainer® devices.
3. Training Events - BD® Academy Center
BD® Academy Centre is our Training Centre located at the Becton Dickinson head office in Milan, Italy. A number of ad hoc training and/or refresher sessions for healthcare professionals are held here on a regular basis.
